An Open Letter to The Person Who Stole My Books

Posted by aresto on August 15, 2006

Dear Sir/Madam

I write this letter as a way to let you know exactly how I felt when I realized I have became a victim of your mischief. I hope by doing so I will be able to channel this anger, this grief, and move on with my life. As for you, although I am pretty sure you won’t in any chance read this letter, you will know that you have done something unacceptable.

I considered myself to be a very security-aware person. Just like my other properties, I kept those books in a place I considered safe–in this case a NEC’s goodie bag next to my desk in my office. But, it turned out that it didn’t stop you. You boldly violated my “restricted area”, had the pleasure of browsing every books in that bag, and finally decided to snatch two valuable books.

Judging from your choice, I realized that you’re not an ordinary petty thief driven by mere economic motive. You delibaretely chose two high quality books, Bill Gates’ Business @ Speed of Thought and Mendidik Manusia Indonesia– a collection of essays on Indonesia’s education in Kompas newspaper. Frankly, your appetite confused me and made me give up the effort of profiling you. I mean, perhaps I could rationalize why you chose’ Gates book. You clearly a pragmatic man who don’t give a damn how you obtain your goals and fulfill your needs, and a prominent leader of an undisputed software behemoth is definetely someone you can learn from. In the other hand, for you to pick such book as Mendidik Manusia Indonesia really made me wonder. Are you someone who care about issues related to Indonesia’s human resource development ? Are you looking for some insights and opinions to help you contribute your share in the effort to improve Indonesia’s education quality ? Then, why the hell did you decide to gain something so noble by doing something so disgraceful ? You, my foe, have to learn that the end doesn’t justified the means. A virtue cannot be achieved with wrong deeds, no way.

Right now you probably there somewhere reading my books with a confidence that your crime will go unpunished. I want to warn you not to keep your guard down, stay alert and don’t be reckless to give me the slightest hint of who you are. Because when I find out who you are, you will have to endure the same pain you have inflicted upon me. Right now I’m thinking about giving you a good poke in the eye, a mighty kick to your groin, and a good old uppercut right to your solar plexus. No, I am not a forgiveful man when it came to my books.

Enjoy my books, even if in the end you will remain a mystery for me, one way or another you will receive your punishment. What goes around comes around.

Vengefully yours,

Aresto

This post marked the launch of a new series in Aresto In-depth called Open Letters to People or Entities that Unlikely to Respond. The idea is not originally from me, I copied it from Mcsweeneys. I thought it as a good way to express how pissed off you get about someone or somebody. Feel free to send me your own Open Letters to People or Entities that Unlikely to Respond.
